An elastomer is an "elastic" polymer which can tolerate large distortions and quickly return to its initial shape almost perfectly. Most of the elastomers are organic polymers, except silicones, which are different due to their mineral origin.
Polyurethane materials are used for component parts in applications that are subject to impact and abrasion. They are also used as bearings, bushing, wear plates, sprockets, waveguide gaskets and roll or gear coverings.
Polyurethane is naturally yellow and semi-translucent, but it is often colored according to its durometer. Polyurethane is available in several hardness and is resistant to impact, corrosion and to tearing. Polyurethane is oil and solvent resistant and can be custom molded to high tolerances.
Polyurethane can be easily vulcanize to metal parts and various specialty formulations are available with fillers to enhance performance such as: ceramic, metal or fabric.
Polyurethane is sold in standard sheet and custom molded parts.
