PLASTICS MATERIALS GLOSSARY

GLOSSARY OF PLASTIC MATERIALS DISTRIBUTED AT  POLYALTO

In this glossary, Polyalto provides a definition of the main categories of plastic materials available in our inventory. We also invite you to take a look at photo carousel introducing our plastic materials and products available, located under the descriptions.

Abs

ABS resins are terpolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. These are hard, rigid and tough material, even at low temperatures. In addition to providing a good dimensional stability, ABS is water-proof, and almost unaffected by salt and most inorganic acids.

Accessories/others

We provide a wide range of sign accessories, profiles and hardware to finalize your projects. You will also find in this section the security mirrors.

Acetal

The acetal is a synthetic polymer based on formaldehyde polymerization technology. It is characterized by good mechanical properties, including a very good resistance to abrasion. This material is excellent for fabrication of parts where dimensional stability is important.

Acrylic

Also known as the trade name Plexiglas®, acrylic is a polyvalent and strong thermoplastic. Transparent, opaque or textured, acrylic is perfect for signs, bright banners, visuals, displays, engraving, furniture, stores layout, decoration, industrial parts and safety devices.

Fluororopolymer

LFluoropolymers are made of fluorinated plastic material which is characterized by high resistance to chemicals as well as good thermal stability and low coefficient of friction. Materials include among others Teflon® (PTFE), which is the commercial name of the product and the manufacturer who invented the product: Dupont™ Teflon®. Fluoropolymers can be chemically modified to allow etching or contain additives such as glass, graphite, bronze and many others.

Nylon

Nylons are thermoplastic polyamides (PA). They are highly resistant to impact, chemicals and wear and provide good tensile strength.

PETG

PETG (Polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified) is a clear polyester of the family of thermoplastics. It is a very strong, easy to transform at low-temperature material that can be fold and die-cut.

High-Performance plastics

Mainly used in the high technology areas, high-performance plastics are designed to withstand extreme environments. They are easy to process and most of them have excellent antibacterial or thermal properties. They are used for mechanical parts and high precision castings as well as electrical, electronic and medical components. In addition, materials may be strengthened by different additives in order to present higher strength to chemicals, abrasion, radiation and high loads.

Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP)

Thermoset FRP are glass fibre reinforced polymers. An additive or color can be added to resins to modify properties. These are high performance, perfect materials for the fabrication of working platform, removable floor, mezzanine, safe stairs, railing and many other structures. They are mainly used in the chemical, petroleum, food and pulp and paper industries as well as in processing plants and power plants.

Recycled plastics

Today recycling makes remarkable progress and allows among others to offer recycled and plastic products made from post-consumer plastic materials. These green products are good for the environment and stand out as a strategic choice for eco-friendly businesses.

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate are thermoplastic with high molecular weight. They have exceptional high-impact strength under a wide temperature range. Polycarbonate are characterized by a good combination of strength and transparency. In addition, they provide superior protection to the yellowing.

Polyethylene

Polyethylene is one of the most used a thermoplastic polymer. White or coloured, it is available in a variety of grades and formulations and characterized by toughness, excellent chemical resistance and low coefficient of friction. Polyethylene has low moisture absorption.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a non-contaminant translucent white thermoplastic. With its hard and shiny surface, polypropylene is approved for direct food contact and is suited for environments where there is concern about bacteria.

Polyurethane

In the family of elastomers, polyurethane is a "flexible" polymer that can support very large deformations to return quickly and almost completely in its original shape. Polyurethane has a high impact and tear resistance.

produits finisFinished products

Printed advertising holder, donation box, cutting board and other standard plastics products are available in our inventory to takeaway. Also include in this category the heat recovery air exchanger Polymair 1500TM, an exclusive product to Polyalto

Industrial laminates

Also referred as composites, laminated plastics are thermoset products made from resin impregnated of reinforcing materials. Lightweight, dense and hard, they have excellent mechanical and insulating properties that will not soften, and are extremely durable and moisture-resistant. Laminates are built by layers comprising at least two components.

PVC/CPVC

PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and CPVC (Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) are inexpensive and very versatile thermoplastics. These two polymers are similar in their composition, but different in working temperature limit (strain) which is higher for the CPVC.

Substrates

Our panels and rigid or flexible substrates are lightweight, versatile and water proof. Many are ease to die-cutting. Substrates are perfect for digital and screen printing, or lettering.

UHMW

UHMW are sliding materials that offer great abrasion and compression resistance. Relatively malleable, they are excellent electrical insulators and they can be welded by thermoplastic welding processes. Several formulations are available including natural (white), static dissipative, UV resistant, self-lubricating, recycled and high temperature resistant.

Vinyls and banners

Vinyl, industrial fabrics and banners are perfect for sign and digital printing. A wide range of colours, sizes and finishes are available.
